1937: Spokane boy scouts challenge local Indians at celebration

JUNE 18, 1937: Indians challenge boy scout firemakers.

Indians at Inchelium who have challenged Spokane Boy Scouts to stage a fire making contest with primitive materials had best look to their laurels when this pair from Troop 45 get into action on July 2, 3 and 4.

In the upper picture, Jimmie Woodchuck of Inchelium is making fire by friction, while Big Cricket is "standing by" and supplying necessary wood.

In the lower photo Don Schoedel, 16, left, and Dick Marshall, 16, with their flint and steel are ready to strike sparks on their charred wicking and piles of tinder. Spokane scout troops will be represented by some eight or 10 firemakers at the Indian celebration.
