Nov. 21, 1930: Smart Redskin Jailed at Last

Willie Pichette, heap smart Indian, is in the Spokane county jail today.

Willie is smart, even the secret service men admit it, smart enough to fool them twice but not quite smart enough to slicker them the third time.

Today Willie languishes in jail, awaiting trial on a charge of stealing a government check made out to another Indian and cashing it through a forged signature.

RIDES AWAY ON PONY

The offense was committed in August, 1929, near Inchelium. Six months ago Willie was indicted as the guilty person. In September an Indian policeman went to the home on the banks of the Columbia river near Inchelium, but Willie saw him coming, piled onto his pony and went rapidly away from there.

Later the Indian policeman returned, this time in company with a federal officer. Willie saw both of them, and ducked out of sight. Today he told the officers he eluded them through ferrying himself across the river on a couple of logs.

Wednesday brought his third "contact" with the federals, and this time he didn't get away. Deputy U.S. Marshal Sibley has brought him to Spokane from Marcus and lodged him in jail to await the action of the federal court.
