John Slagel, Republic, takes advantage of the brief re-emergence of Kettle Falls on the Columbia River. Thousands of Inland Empire residents have flocked to the historic site north of the Kettle Falls Bridge on Highway 395 to see the falls, which by this weekend were 30 feet above the now-lowered lake bottom. The falls reappeared, after being buried under Lake Roosevelt for 28 years, when water backed up behind Grand Coulee Dam. Water was lowered behind the dam a record 125 feet below normal operating level to allow deep excavation work for a new third powerhouse. The falls are expected to be visible until mid-May, before they again are buried from view.
