Oct. 4, 1965: Here is some history about the north half

Early in 1891 a commission set out to meet with the Colville Reservation tribes to negotiate the northern half of the reservation. The commission and the Indians reached agreement on May 23, 1891.

By this agreement the Indians agreed to sell the Government 1,500,000 acres or about half of the reservation for $1,500,000 in five annual installments of $300,000.

The agreement concluded in 1891 with the Indians was never ratified by Congress. The Act of July 1, 1892 (27 Stat. 62) restored the north half to the public domain but prior to opening the area for settlement 660 Indians were allotted a total of 51,653 acres.

The balance of the area (1,449,268 acres) was opened to settlement by Presidential proclamation October 10, 1900. The Act provided that the proceeds arising from entries made on these lands should be held in the United States Treasury until final distribution thereof should be made.
