Aug. 23, 1932: Colvilles hear Indian leader

NESPELEM, Aug. 23 - Assistant Commissioner of Indian Affairs J. Henry Scattergood spent a day at the Colville agency, where an outdoor meeting attended by many Indians was held. The day before had been spent at the Spokane agency of the jurisdiction and at the Inchelium station.

Reservation conditions in general were observed. Indian homes and fields and gardens were visited and information was sought about the development of irrigation possibilities. Assurance was given that the present administration in Washington desires to have the Indians retain land so that subsistence may be raised, so that there is a fixed abode and that the land may be an asset to depend on at a time when employment elsewhere is difficult to secure.
