Indian Mary (Mrs. Mary Lloyd), daughter of Princess Green Feet and one of the best known and loved of the Northwest Indians, passed away at her home in Spokane, November 27, at the age of 74.
Indian Mary never knew the exact date of her birth. She was born in a huckleberry patch in the Huckleberry mountains west of Colville, where her mother had gone with the other Indians to pick berries. She said that she had heard her mother say it was under the light of the full moon and since the huckleberries ripen in July, she judged it must have been during that month.
As a young girl she attended the mission north of Colville and was educated by the sisters of Charity. Having a passionate love for her people, she worked incessantly during her entire life for the betterment, and was much loved by all.
In the 1920s, she was elected to the Indian congress and the Colville tribesmen were so proud of Mary that they attended the meeting in hundreds to show their appreciation. Indian Mary had her own motto "Each for all and all for each" to which she devoted her entire life.
Many of the tribesmen of the Colville's who will mourn her passing and many are the white men who will miss Indian Mary, whose fairness in dealings with her people was beyond reproach.
Funeral services were held Wednesday from St. Francis of Assissi church in Spokane, with interment in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
