Oct. 5, 1931: White shoots Indian romeo

KETTLE FALLS - The shooting of Alex Edwards, Indian, by a white man named Haygen on the Inchelium reservation near here yesterday morning was reported by E.M. Tardy, Indian agent here.

Tardy said it was reported to him that Haygen resented what he believed were intentions to Mrs. Haygen by the Indian. Yesterday morning the agent said he was told Edwards appeared near the Haygen home riding one horse and leading one that was saddled.

Believing Edwards was after his wife, Tardy said he was told, Haygen opened fire with a .30 caliber U.S. Army rifle, shooting in Indian in the chest and groin. Edwards died almost at once.

The coroner was notified and it was expected an inquest would be called today. Haygen was held in county jail.
