1929, January 9: INDIAN OFFICERS FREED IN KILLING / Dupuis and Carson commended for way they handled Sizemore case
COLVILLE, WASH. – Murder charges against Victor Dupuis and Kit Carson, Colville Indian reservation police, arising out of the shooting of Robert Sizemore at Inchelium Christmas night, were dismissed when the men appeared for hearing here yesterday.
The men were commended by Roy C. Fox, Spokane, United States district attorney, “for their forbearance and courage” in handling the situation.
Sizemore was shot and killed by Dupuis when he attempted to attack the officer on the porch of the Indian agent’s office at Inchelium, following an altercation in a dance hall next door.
The district attorney stated that the evidence showed that Dupuis did not shoot until Sizemore mounted the steps of the porch, uttering threats to “clean up” on the officer.
The hearing was held before United States Commissioner H.H. McCulloch.
Note: M. Sandvig said on our Facebook page in 2017 that the family has a completely different version about how the killing took place.
