Feb. 24, 1966: Inchelium wins shocker over Davenport

CHENEY - Reardan led a three-team Bi-County League delegation into the semifinals of the Northeast District "B" Basketball Tournament Wednesday but Inchelium stole the show with a stunning upset of Davenport at Eastern Washington State College.

Inchelium, only the No. 3 team from the Panorama League, stopped the No. 2 Bi-County school 61-50 in night action and the Panorama's top team, Curlew, nearly made it an all-Panorama semifinal but lost to Odessa 55-44 in the last half.

Reardan broke all the scoring records in the tournament book with a 96-32 win over the defending state champion Harrington and Freeman whipped Hunters 64-34 in the afternoon games.

MAJOR UPSET

Inchelium's victory, one of the biggest upsets in recent years, was a combination of a fine zone defense and the shooting of Bill Crawford (Mollenberg) and Terry Finley.

Crawford scored 19 points to lead the game and kept the Hornets in the contest in the first half.

Davenport, the No. 2 Bi-County League team, held a 30-26 halftime lead but the Hornets sparked by Finley, came back and tied the count in the third period, and went on a 42-38 edge by the end of the quarter. Davenport fought back to tie it twice but Crawford hit a free throw and basket making it 51-48 with 2:25 left and Inchelium was never headed after that.

Also scoring were Rudy Christianson, Dave Desautel, Eric Ellsworth, Danny Shaffer and Richard Ferguson.
