Feb. 17, 1977: New Inchelium School to Rise

INCHELIUM - A Spokane architectural firm, Environmental Concern, Inc. has been named to design and supervise construction of an educational complex for Inchelium School District 70, Supt. Edward W. Dodson announced.

Dr. Dodson said the facility will serve 250 students, kindergarten through 12th grade.

The $2,768,000 project is being funded by a local public works Economic Development Act grant from the Department of Health, Education and welfare, Dodson said.

He said the project is important in that it will replace unsafe and substandard wooden buildings.

Mrs. Marguerite Ensminger, Inchelium School Board chairman, explained that when the former community of Inchelium was moved up the hillside to make way for the new Lake Roosevelt reservoir  behind Grand Coulee Dam, back in the 1930s, old frame buildings and others newly built were located on the new school site. These structures "have all deteriorated beyond usability," she said.

Dennis N. Young, supervising architect for Environmental Concern, said that the community's desire to locate the new school in an open area surrounded by trees and a view of Lake Roosevelt poses certain design problems, while EDA requirements call for work on the project to begin within 90 days.

Nevertheless, he said, it is hoped that ground breaking takes place March 29.
