May 31, 1978: Inchelium driver released

An Inchelium, Wash., man was released on his own recognizance Tuesday on a negligent homicide charge stemming from a triple fatality auto accident Monday.

Matthew R. John, 40, was released after a preliminary court appearance before District Court Judge Kathryn Ann Mautz, Tuesday.

John was driving a pickup truck which bumped a carload of his friends about a mile west of the state line on Interstate 90 about 6:20 p.m., Monday.

Occupants of both vehicles were returning from horse races in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, when the accident occurred, the Washington State Patrol said.

Killed were Helen Ferguson, 35, Keller, Wash., the driver of the car; Lena Laramie, 55, Inchelium, and Mary Wong, 72, Inchelium.

Mrs. Ferguson's 12 -year-old daughter, Tina Meusy, Inchelium was listed in satisfactory condition Tuesday in Valley General Hospital.

John apparently changed lanes and bumped into the Ferguson car, forcing it on to the grassy median.

The car veered back on the roadway and overturned, throwing all four occupants onto the road, the WSP said. No one in the John vehicle was injured.
