Aug. 31, 1954: More sawmills start operating; strike 'still on,' says Union

Sawmills in increasing numbers are getting back into production today as striking A.F. of L. workers returned to their jobs in the wake of the peace proposal of Governors Langie and Patterson of Washington and Oregon.

C.I.O. Woodworkers put the proposal under study in district councils and there were optimistic reports — although they were not direct from union headquarters.

There was no hint on what course pine operators would take. Kenneth Davis, executive secreatry of the Northwestern Council of the Lumber & Sawmill Workers, warned that this could have grave consequences. The strike, he said, "is still on" because pine operators deferred action on the governors' plan.

Pine-industry employers from Eastern Washington, Northern Idaho and Western Montana will meet in Spokane tomorrow to vote on the proposal.

George Tichy, general manager of the Timber Products Manufacturers' Association which represents the Inland Empire operators, said more than 100 members of the association are expected to attend the Spokane meeting.

Acceptance would end a long strike of 1,000 A.F. of L. workers at Spokane and Inchelium. Some have been out since June 2.
