Oct. 7, 1948: Indian boy, girl held for deaths

An Indian girl was being held without bond today pending removal to Spokane for a federal grand-jury inquiry into a death on the Colville Indian Reservation. An Indian boy also is held for inquiry into another death.

Both have been charged with murder.

Anne Bexley, 20 years old, of Ford, was arraigned before Paul Sax, U.S. Commissioner, after an autopsy revealed that William Andrews, 45, had died from a knife wound. She made no statement.

The boy, 17-year-old Stephen Peters of Inchelium, was charged in connection with the death September 30 of Thomas Dick, 21, near Covada. An autopsy indicated death resulted from a stab wound.

Frank Freeman, assistant United States district attorney, said Peters testified at his arraignment that the stabbing occurred in self-defense when the two fought after their car stalled.
