Jan. 31, 1920: Covada Prospects

A force of ten or twelve men are at work on the Longstreet Mine.

Mr. Messenger, who owns the mining claims formerly belonging to the Orin company, which he has named the Leonard Wood, is planning to thoroughly prospect the ground as soon as weather conditions will permit. The property lies to the southeast of the Longstreet mine, and mining men are of the opinion that the system of veins now being developed on the Longstreet passes through the Leonard Wood, and also through the Ivanhoe group from which several tons of rich ore was shipped several years ago.Mr Garret, one of the owners of the Longstreet Mine, has been in poor health for some time and has gone out of camp for medical treatment.

Garfield Perry, who is working at Longstreet Mine, has moved his family to Covada.

Miss Elizabeth Howe has been engaged to teach school in Nine Mile neighborhood.

We understand that William Smith has sold his group of mining claims to Mr. Brandt. This property was formerly owned by John Cameron.

A man from Hunters took out a load of 20 hogs Monday, which he bought from Forest Butler.

There has been considerable sickness among the Covada people, and several school children were compelled to miss getting their certificate for being neither tardy nor absent. Among the pupils out on account of sickness were Stella Reunie, Richard Proctor, Joe Curry, Robert Proctor and Anna Bourgeau. Miss Moorehouse, the Covada teacher, is being congratulated upon having very few tardy marks on her school register.

Mr. and Mrs. Savage and Mr. and Mrs. McDonald of the Nez Perce community visited the members of the school board last week to make plans for establishing another school in the district. All were in favor of the Nez Perce people having a school. The community south of the Nez Perce valley is requesting a division of the district. They too want a school. Unfortunately they designate a line for their northern boundary which cuts the Nez Perce neighborhood in two. There is plenty of territory for another district, however, by going farther west and it is hoped that they will succeed in getting a school district.
