OLYMPIA (AP) - A $24,457 final settlement from the federal government for tuition of Indian children in state schools in 1935 was distributed today by Dr. N.D. Showalter, superintendent of public instruction.
The federal government pays part of the cost of education for Indian children living on reservations.
The amount was distributed to eighty districts, largest payments going to Inchelium, Ferry County, $2,313; Nespelem, Okanogan, $1949; Wellpinit, Stevens, $2,665; White Swan, Yakima, $2,074.
The payment is about three-fourths the original claim. On the basis of the present contract, $100,936 will be distributed to districts in the state which enroll Indian pupils during the present school year.
