Richard Nelson "Dick" Harlan, 83, died Jan. 10, 2001, at the Lakewood Pointe Assisted Living Facility in Lakeview.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the First United Presbyterian Church with Pastor Robert Badgley officiating. Inurnment will follow at the IOOF Cemetery with the VFW Layne Clifton Post 4070 participating.

He was born Dec. 12, 1917, in Chehalis, Wash., to Nelson Ray and Susie Elvira (Judd) Harlan. Following his mother's death in 1921, he was raised by his aunt, Ida Judd, and graduated from high school in Inchelium, Wash., in 1936. He went to work for the U.S. Forest Service at Fort Rock in 1938, and married Margaret Iverson in 1941. During World War II he served with the Navy Seabees in the South Pacific. He worked on the Deschutes and Fremont National Forests, retiring in 1973 following 35 years of service. He worked the following seven years for Western Roads. A lifetime baseball fan, he attended two World Series and enjoyed spring training "Cactus League" games in Arizona for many years. A long-time volunteer with the Lakeview Disaster Unit, he served several terms on the Lake County Airport Commission.

He was known at the Order of the Antelope for his poetry recitations. Other organizations he affiliated with included Toastmasters, the Eagles Lodge and the First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret; children and their spouses, Russel and Sharol of Burbank, Wash., Sidney and Gary Reynolds of Missoula, Mont., Raymond and Joy Harlan of Lakeview, Ronald and Marquette of Gresham, Kathryn of Lake Oswego; and eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Lakeview Disaster Unit at 245 N. F St. Lakeview, OR 97630, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Ousley Osterman Hufstutter Funeral Chapel has charge of the arrangements.
