After shaking the nerves from a practice round Tuesday, Inchelium freshman Randi Finley became the first Hornet to ever make the cut after Day 1 of the 1B/2B State Golf Championships here at Columbia Point Golf Course.
One of her coaches, Duane Gatlin, however, didn’t fair so well.
“Her first shot off the tee box, I got goose bumps,” he said.
Finley shot par on the first two holes and played a solid rest of the day, finishing with a 101—good enough for 13th.
“Awesome start,” Inchelium head coach Cheryl Gatlin said. “She feels so much better this morning.”
A big reason she made the cut were six bogeys and seven double bogeys.
Finley tees off first tomorrow at 8 a.m.
“We are extremely proud of her,” Cheryl said. “It’s testimony to (Duane), Randi and I that we are giving our kids the kind of support they need to be able to compete at this level. Like I said it takes a village.”
Emily Baumgart of DeSales shot 10 below her nearest competitor, Pomeroy’s Deana Caruso, at 77.
Wilbur-Creston’s Alicia Johnson finished Day 1 in third place with an 88. Okanogan’s Vanessa Vanerweide also made the cut, shooting a 98.

Finley will be heading to the Columbia Point Golf Course in Richland for the 2015 1B/2B State golf tournament, which begins May 27.
Finley fought back in the final 9 holes after she got down early.
“I did so bad the front nine, I wanted to quit,” said Finley. “But did better the back, I shot a 104 and still made it to state.”
She finished with an overall score of 209, as her score from subdistricts a (105) was added to her score from districts (104).
“To reach within and come out of it after not doing so well, and then to go beyond that, that’s fantastic!” said Gatlin.
Fellow teammate Victoria Seymour, was forced to stop playing due to a lingering wrist injury mid-tournament. Seymour shot a 108 in subdistricts.
Roger Finley, the only boy competing for the Hornets golf team, shot a 96 on the day combined with his sub districts score gives him a total of 191, but it wasn’t enough as he was sitting on the outside of the cut.
