The Phillips name came to Inchelium from Iowa around 1908, according to the Spokane Chronicle. Charles M. Phillips, who passed away in 1959 at age 72, was the patriarch of the local family. He was born August 24, 1886 in Centerville, Iowa, a town of more than 5,000 residents at that time, per the U.S. Census. His wife Julia lived in Nespelem at the time of his death, per the Chronicle. His children included Mary Warner, Bertha Noyes, Joyce Phillips, Clara Toulou, Carmen Zaugg, James Phillips and Eugene Phillips.
