-Declares no one in party had liquor — thought they were held up
COLVILLE - Joe Baulne, who was shot at the Inchelium Fourth of July Celebration Monday night and who has been in the hospital ever since, made his first statement today and said that none in the auto in which he was riding had any liquor and no one in the party was a bootlegger so far as he ever knew, and that after several shots had been fired and he had been wounded they sped on, thinking they were being held up, but afterwards they came back.
"Mary Holmes, wife of one of the men, was driving the car and there were three other men in the party," Mr. Baulne said. "We were going rather slowly and passed first one car and then a second, when the firing began. At the first shot I crouched down but was not hit until the second or third shot."
Baulne is a quarter Indian and of French descent. He is recovering from his wound.
United States Indian Farmer Cope is held at Republic, pending investigation, and is said to have made the statement that he and other deputies fired at the passing car trying to puncture the tires and to bring it to a stop, suspecting that the men in the car were selling liquor to Indians.
