July 8, 1927: Probe Inchelium shooting

-Joe Baulne in serious condition at Republic hospital after fracaas

REPUBLIC - Prosecuting Attorney Johnson and County Commissioners May and LeFevre returned today from Inchelium, where they spent yesterday investigating the shooting of Joe Baulne, 35, who is in the hospital here perhaps fatally wounded.

Baulne, who lives near Rogers Bar on the Columbia River, was shot Monday by an Indian farmer named Cope and two deputies.

Baulne and others were suspected by Cope of selling liquor to Indians. At the time of the shooting, Baulne with others in an automobile were driving north a few miles from Inchelium and were ordered to stop but disregarded his orders. Cope claims he and the deputies fired shots at the tires of the automobile to bring them to a stop. One shot went wide and struck Baulne in the back. Baulne claims he did not see Cope. The citizens of Inchelium and community are very much aroused and sympathize with Baulne and threatened to lynch Cope.
