July 12, 1927: Lawyers wrangle in conspiracy case


-Completion of jury not in sight yet in federal rum trial of 15 Spokane men

Work of selecting jurors to try the conspiracy charges against Charles W. Hedger, City Detectives Leroy Self and W.J. Hudson and others, required the entire morning today in federal court. Indications at noon were that the rest of the day or longer will be required for completion of the jury.

THOSE SEATED SO FAR

At 2:30 p.m. the state had exercised five of its six peremptory challenges, while the defense had used six of its 10.

Those seated at 2:30 p.m., all subject to removal on peremptory, are F.E. Pease, Usk; A.E. Lunden, Ione; E.J. Zigler, Usk; James Sparling, Inchelium; Alex McKay, Republic; S. Barrett, Spokane, Arthur Campbell, Chelan; Willis Carey, Cashmere; Albert Witlz, Addy; J.T. Hardtt, Newport; A.J. Coleman, Tiger; and M.C. Devore, Blueslide.

Clarnece Watt of Inchelium and Carl Hane, Republic mining man, were excused by the government this morning on peremptory challenges.
