-Indians combine fun with serious matters — tug of war are held
The first big meeting of the Indian congress and powwow was held here Wednesday with a big crowd in attendance. The meeting was presided over by L.H. Runnels of Okanogan. President Gus Paul of Inchelium called the meeting to order and speeches were made by Theodore Bourgeau, Little Alex, and Peter Noyes of Inchelium, James Bernard of Republic, Antowine Gus of Nespelem, Morris Antelope of the Coeur d'Alene Tribe, Peter Silva of the Spokane Tribe, Father Grieve of the Ward Mission, and Mary Lloyd of Spokane. This get together meeting expressed the general sentiment for a strong federation of the vanishing American Indain.
Stick games are being played every afternoon and evening.
Wednesday night a big war dance was held on the street, the Indians being in costumes, some of which are beautiful and expensive.
The Inchelium orchestra gave a big dance in the community hall. In a tug of war between white women and Indian women, the Indian women won, and the white men won out against the Indians in their tug of war.
Big meetings will be held every afternoon during the rest of the congress, which closes Sunday. Indians are continually arriving.
