Dec. 26, 1928: Indian police shoot man, then flee

-Pioneer Inchelium man shot twice after rough and tumble fight outside dance hall

COLVILLE - Robert Sizemore, member of a pioneer Inchelium family, was shot twice in the hip and leg last night during and altercation with two Indian policemen at Inchelium. He is in Mount Carmel hospital here in a serious condition.

WITNESSES SAY

According to witnesses, the two policemen, Victor Dupuis and Kit Carson, attacked Sizemore as he was leaving a dance hall. Dupuis and Sizemore engaged in a rough-and-tumble fight, and when Sizemore was getting the better end of the fight, witnesses said Dupuis pulled out his pistol and shot twice, both bullets taking effect.

Mrs. Sizemore, who witnessed the fight, tore the gun from the Indian's hand and Dupuis and Carson are said to have fled into the darkness.

Sheriff Dick Bone of Stevens County, a brother-in-law to Sizemore, said the Indian police have no jurisdiction within the town of Inchelium. It is not known whether the two policemen were taken into custody.
